The best 8K TVs for 2023: from Samsung, LG and Sony

The best 8K TVs deliver incredible images because they have four times the pixels of 4K TVs—and 4K TVs have four times the pixels of 1080p HD TVs.

A 1080p HD TV has a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, a 4K TV has a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, and an 8K TV has an incredible 7,680 x 4,320 pixels. So, assuming your TV is large enough, the difference in picture quality over a 4K TV will be astounding.

Until recently, adding those extra pixels to one of the best 8K TVs was prohibitively expensive. So, while some of the best TVs have been 8K, they have only been available to the wealthy. The great news.

1. Samsung QN900B Neo QLED 8K

Thanks to its mini-LED panel, which offers stunning picture quality, exceptional color and brightness, great sound, and outstanding blacks—bonus points for the fact that it looks stunning when it's off too—the Samsung QN900B Neo QLED 8K TV raises the bar for home entertainment significantly.

Since Samsung's "Quantum" Mini LEDs are 1/40th the thickness of a regular LED, the backlight can accommodate thousands more LEDs. This results in much more accurate dimming zones and nearly identical black levels to OLEDs.

The likelihood of seeing bright areas of the screen unnaturally bleed over into darker spots should be greatly reduced; we didn't see it at all. Smaller LEDs also deliver more precision and less blooming.

The Smart Hub UI, which takes Samsung's previously excellent smart TV interface and makes it more frustrating, is the only drawback. Settings can no longer be changed instantly, nor can viewing modes. Even though this is only a small problem, it may irritate you while it is being addressed.

2. Samsung QN900A Neo QLED

The Q900A, another mini-LED model, is the second Samsung on our list of the best 8K televisions. Like its sibling, it provides you with breathtaking picture quality, exceptional color and brightness, great sound, and outstanding black levels. It also has a great aesthetic appeal. Although it can't quite produce colors and lights as well as an OLED TV, its contrast levels are still very good compared to OLED.

The Samsung also has the AI-based "Neo Quantum Processor 8K," which did an excellent job of upscaling, in addition to its mini-LED panel. One of the key selling points of any 8K TV is how well it handles upscaling, as we noted in our review. fortunately, the QN900A excels at making content appear crystalline clear without using any artificial smoothing.

There are three sizes, with the 65-inch model starting at a relatively low $4,999 / £5,999, so you don't have to spend a lot of money to get a terrifyingly large TV here, even though it is relatively expensive compared to standard LED TVs. Given that it is an 8K TV, this is our top pick for budgets in the middle range.

3. Samsung QN800B

The Samsung QN800B is an 8K TV that is incredibly impressive. It has gaming capabilities, a comprehensive smart TV experience, good audio, an external box for physical inputs, a mini-LED screen that promises more effective backlighting than anyone is used to from LCD panels, and a profile that is thinner than the thinnest OLED TV you can currently purchase.br/>br/> Wow, it looks fantastic. In our review, we stated that the screen's "brightness is commendable, black levels are impressive by backlit LCD screen standards, the color palette is wide and realistic, and both edge-definition and motion control are impressive."

The backlight control, however, falls short of other high-end TVs with 8K resolution. Additionally, we discovered during our testing that the screen's ability to control its own brightness can result in some unlevel viewing.

Furthermore, upscaling content that isn't as information-dense as 4K can cause serious issues for the Samsung. Which, while not yet the case, wouldn't be a problem if everything you wanted to watch was in 8K resolution.

Thankfully, the 65-inch model of this 8K TV costs just £2,699 ($2799/AU$4499) and isn't among the priciest ones available. By 8K TV standards, that is "cheap," but it's important to note that there are better 4K TVs available. No, neither the LG C2 nor the Sony A95K are capable of dazzling you with 8K picture quality, but they are both better choices for displaying 4K content.

4. LG Z2

An OLED TV with 8K resolution? With the exception of the extremely expensive BeoVision Harmony, which costs even more money, only LG is currently really pursuing this strategy. And it's amazing; we wish more businesses would do it. The audio output is impressive for such a slim set, and the picture quality is stunning. The colors and brightness are exactly what you'd expect from a high-quality OLED.

Why isn't it at the top of our list if it's so good? Unfortunately, a TV this size also comes with a hefty price tag; at the time of writing, the 88-inch costs £24,999.98, while the 77-inch costs just under £12,000.

This is home entertainment heaven, if you have the money and the space. This TV can be wall mounted, unlike its predecessor, and the already impressive Alpha a9 processor has been improved with even better tone mapping and upscaling. Additionally, the depth of field and support for surround sound have improved, giving the onscreen images a more realistic appearance. A bonus of 4 ports that support HDMI 2.1 completes the package.

Everything that was great about the LG ZX is improved even further by the LG Z2. This means that this TV is without a doubt the best LG has to offer, as well as possibly the best TV available today.

5. Sony Z9K

Although we haven't had the chance to give this new Master Series 8K TV a long-term review, we have seen it in person, and you can consider our expectations for it to be far exceeded.

The mini-LED panel has excellent color reproduction, is extremely bright, and is very detailed. All the essential technologies are present here, as you would expect from a high-end Sony: XR Backlight Master Drive, Acoustic Multi-Audio, for directional sound, Cognitive Processor XR for a more lifelike experience, XR Backlight Master Drive for exceptional dynamic range with almost no halo or flare around bright spots, and Bravia Cam, which analyzes where you're sitting and optimizes the picture and sound accordingly.
